Goriba is the haoussa name of a palm tree that is well known in the Sahelian zone of West-Africa, often called Doum palm or 'arbre à pain d'épice' in French. Outside West-Africa, the goriba grows well in numerous Africain countries such as Egypt, Kenya and Sudan, and is also found in the Arabian peninsula (Mariod, 2019). In Egypt this palm has been cultivated alongside the date palm since Pharaonic times; the fruit and leaves have been found in several royal tombs (Ismail, 2016).
The goriba palm tree has multiple uses. The leaves are used for the production of mats, baskets, ropes and more. The fruit can be consumed raw or be used for the production of juices. The grain can also be consumed raw and during harvesting season you will often find children cutting and selling those.
